“Living Miracle” Pit Bull Has Survived The Worst; Now She Just Needs A Home

This dog was discovered on a sidewalk in Los Angeles, at the end of last summer.

She was just 26 pounds and infested with ticks and maggots. From her looks and condition, it seemed she’d been on that sidewalk for a long time.

“She was dying when she was found,” says Tami Baumann, president of Ghetto Rescue FFoundation, a rescue group run by Los Angeles police officers. “No one thought she would survive for 24 hours.”

The dog was given a name, Spirit Golden Heart, because of the heart-shaped marking on her coat, and because she seemed so determined to live.

“When you look at her, as emaciated as she is and how much she’s hurting and how hungry she is, she is still so sweet. She looks up at you with those eyes and you know she wants to fight,” GRFF volunteer Alicia Featherstone told a local ABC affiliate at the time.

Spirit was in the hospital for weeks. She got better, bit by bit. She made it.

“She is literally a living miracle,” says actress and Pit Bull advocate Rebecca Corry, whose nonprofit Stand Up For Pits Foundation donated $1,000 to Spirit’s care.

“And I personally went and met her in the hospital and brought her a gift basket,” says Rebecca. “I wanted her to live so bad, and experience delicious food, warmth, love and respect.”

Spirit has been getting all of that for the last seven months, in a foster home. She’s filled out — that heart marking on her side’s expanded with the rest of her — and gotten healthy, and has a personality in full force.

She’s showed herself to be affectionate and goofy, and makes clear that she hates brooms, shovels, and toilet seats. (Spirit’s not a fan of cats or small dogs either, alas.) When she sees a rake, she will pick it up in her mouth and carry it around.

From starving on the streets, the dog’s grown into a chubby couch potato, says Tami, who “loves children and is a great companion.”

Tami says there’s been no investigation into who let Spirit get into that terrible shape.

“No evidence other than her, and sadly people don’t want to provide information most of the time anyway,” she says.

Spirit is in good shape now. Better than could have been hoped for, back last summer. And the dog’s supporters are looking forward — for someone with the heart to adopt Sprit Golden Heart, and give her a wonderful place to live for the rest of her life.

“I was and still am sickened, ashamed, and enraged by what happened to her,” says Rebecca. “Now I want her find a perfect and loving home where she can live out the rest of her life with a full belly and tons of love.”

“She is such an awesome being and a silly-looking girl,” says Tami. “Spirit is loving and funny and deserves a forever home.”
