You know how they say every dog has his day? Well, Rocky, a recently adopted 17-year-old rescue pup, is about to have alllll the days.

Rocky was a stray who ended up at the shelter six times in a span of three years. When a young couple arrived at the shelter to drop off a carload of donations, they decided to take a quick walk through to see the adoptable dogs. There, they found Rocky—and immediately adopted him.

When you go to an animal shelter and bring home a senior dog, you’re giving a beautiful, life-changing gift—not only to the dog, but also to yourself. At least, that’s the way Rocky’s new mom feels. She and her husband brought Rocky home knowing full well the inevitable bumps in the road ahead.

Rocky 17 Year Old Senior Dog And His Family

Whether they’ve had to spend the majority of their life in a shelter, lived through abuse or neglect, or had to say goodbye to at least one family in the past, senior dogs have often endured far more than their fair share of heartache.

That’s why Rocky’s amazing new parents’ optimistic outlook on making the most of the time they have together is a fantastic reminder that it’s never too late, and that the best is yet to come!

Rocky 17 Year Old Senior Dog Adopted For Christmas

This is what Rocky’s new mom had to say about him:

I took you on knowing we were going to have to take extra care of you. Knowing that one day you weren’t going to make it outside in time to use the restroom and I would have to clean it up.

I knew one day I was going to have to carry you up the stairs when you no longer have the strength to do it. I knew you were going to eventually lose your hearing and eyesight and we were going to have to spend extra money to make the house safer for you. I knew one day I am going to have to say goodbye to you.

But until then you are the best gift I have ever gotten and I’m really sad I couldn’t give you the best 17 years you deserved, but I promise you’ll have a great life from now to the day I have to say goodbye!

Rocky was adopted from the Friends of Anne Arundel County Animal Control, Inc. in Maryland. Visit their page to find out more or to make a donation to pets in need.
