There’s nothing like the um, “blessing” of a smart dog.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my Doxie Andi, but boy is she a frickin’ little devil weenie. When she wakes up every morning, this is her priority list:
2) Not me
3) Burrowing under anything soft
4) Playing fetch. With herself.
You see my pawblem, then.
Basically, it’s like having a hyperactive toddler who’s decided it’s her job to steal, swindle, con and somehow magically sniff everything interesting in the house that I don’t want her to. She’s very, erm independent. So much so that sometimes, I think she prefers other hoomans over me.
(Lap and hand above are not my own. I’m not jealous. No, I’m not.).
So when Melanie, our BarkLive head pup told me there was a toy that would basically keep Andi occupied AND interacting WITH ME for a substantial period of time, you can imagine I was doubtful. I mean, you’re talking to the hooman who has watched her dog go through a Kong WITH FROZEN PEANUT BUTTER in under 60 seconds and then look up, lick her chops, and burrow under the pillows on my bed since I was no longer of interest.
Then she showed me this at BarkFest:
Yes, it looks like a weird baby Einstein mat for human toddlers. Or a circus trick for clowns. But, what I soon discovered when I tried it out with Andi?
IT’S. A. DOGSEND.
The BUSTER ActivityMat, a.k.a the Greatest Dog Invention Since The Tennis Ball not only kept Andi occupied for a quarter of an hour, it CHALLENGED her and kept her by my side, actually playing productively with me. So instead of figuring out how best to jump up onto furniture to disrupt things on co-workers’ desks…
…she was ON THE GROUND AND FOCUSED ON SOLVING THE PUZZLE I SET OUT FOR HER.
Doxie Instincts + Brilliant Dog Toy Design = Hooman Joy.
Putting it together was easy enough. Basically, it’s a bunch of easily washable, soft pieces that snap onto the actual mat. The pieces I used to form this doge puzzle were:
The 3-Pocket Purse (there are a lot of purses, ok?)
and The Cone Cloth.
Once it was all put together, I slipped in a combo of treats and the kibble I was using for her dinner into the hiding places the pieces naturally form.
After that, I RELEASED THE HOUND!
I fully admit, I knew how, erm, motivated my dog was, but it was fascinating watching her brain work.
She immediately went in and tore at each piece, snuffling out every last crumb until it was all empty.
I realized then that I may not have used the most challenging pieces. It was fun trying to figure out what would be the hardest for her to figure out. Next time, I am totally pupgrading to challenge her little devious mind even further. Every piece is labeled with a difficulty level. When I break this out again, I definitely intend to include things like…
and The Spring Roll
…and see if she can ferret out the secrets of THOSE.
I have no doubt she will, because I know my dog and she is absolutely tenacious. And she loves the mat–We’ve used it several times together, and every time I bring it out, she starts vibrating with joy. I also love the quality time we get to spend together setting up the Activity Mat and solving the puzzle together. We turn into a team on a mission!
This is the toy that she (and I) have clearly been waiting for all our lives, and now that we have it, we’re never letting it go, ‘cuz:
