Oh, heavy chewers… or as we at Bark like to call them, Super Chewers. They really do try to test the limit of every toy (or perhaps non-toy) they come into contact with. There are two sides to this phenomenon from a human’s perspective: 1) we absolutely LOVE watching our rippersnappers tear that stuffed squirrel to unrecognizable bits because there’s no doubt that they are having so much fun doing it.
On the other paw, these spontaneously-combusting toys leave a lot of wreckage behind in the form of plastic or rubber pieces, fluff, and squeakers. Your floors basically end up looking like a cotton war zone. Aaaand maybe you wish that your dog would be a tad more respectful to their not-so-robust victims. After all, despite the gargantuan levels of fun they’re having, it would be nice if it would last a little longer. *shrugs* I guess we’ll just have to bring home some toys that stand up to our land sharks.
It’s time to bring your ordinary backyard stick to the next level. The PetProjekt Dogstik is a robust, 100% rubber version of every dog’s favorite past-time—fetching plain ol’ wood sticks. You won’t find BPA, cadmium, or lead in any of this natural rubber, and reviewers love that it lasts longer than a few minutes of playtime.
With more than a few monster chewers in my extended-dog family, it stands to reason I’d have a pretty reliable grapevine of recommendations. Nothing beats the classic ball. Especially if it can be tossed, thrown, and otherwise gnawed on, yet still remain in the land of the living. The Megalast Ball is infused with vanilla extract to combat that dried-drool odor, and it’s made with thermo plastic rubber. That’s really just a fancy way of saying this ball can stand its ground! You can even bring it to the lake or your backyard pool, because it’s totally unsinkable.
Never thought your dog would need a little motivation to CHEW, did you? We love that the West Paw “Tux” toy has a large opening to stuff whatever treats get your pup going. Get this: it’s also 100% guaranteed against damage. That’s a helluva lot of pride these dog people have in their toys, and I can attest to it! My dog loves it when I smear some dog-safe peanut butter inside and put it in the freezer for a few hours. I don’t need to worry about her swallowing any pieces either (she can TRY!) because the recyclable rubber is completely non-toxic.
Your dog can pick this rubber dumbbell up and put it down an endless number of times. Shout out again to the folks at PetProjekt who built this tough-lookin’ toy—they must have quite a few heavy chewers to go home to. The Barkbel measures about 5″ long and has some pretty erratic bouncing patterns for a high-energy play session, and a pretty tough disposition to come in here begging for a workout.
The BarkBone is infused with human-grade peanut butter, but its many “flavor cells” covering the surface are just begging to be filled with whatever spread makes your dog happy. Its curved shape gives pups a better grip, and it’s robust enough to survive some serious chewing. You can even pop it in the freezer to give that yumminess a little more longevity.
Jolly Balls are a fan-favorite in my house! My dog’s not big into fetch, but she’s highly self-efficient and honestly prefers to play by herself. That means pushing, tossing, and thrashing her Jolly Ball around the yard with the rope as a handle, and chasing after it with no interference by yours truly. It’s great for dogs of all sizes, and the ball will NOT deflate if punctured by your super chewer. (In fact, the smooth surface makes it a bit more difficult for dogs to get a good grip in the first place!)
If dogs are gonna chew, they might as well be doing their teeth a favor. Dental chews are a great way to supplement brushing (with an actual toothbrush and toothpaste for dogs). The Benebone dental chews are curved so they’re easy for paws to hold, and the ridges provide that much-needed brushing action. There’s also real bacon infused, combined with uber-tough nylon so this chew lasts ages instead of hours. Note: these are not meant to be consumed. When your Benebone looks like it’s seen better days, replace it!
Nothing like tossin’ the ol’ pigskin around with family, huh? The pup lovers at Planet Dog know a thing or two about tough toys, and the Orbee-Tuff Football is definitely one of my favorites (backed enthusiastically by some awesome people I happen to know with 3 very chew-y Pitties). This ball floats and bounces like crazy, and it can fly all the way to the end zone with a center full of your dog’s favorite treats.
