Personality

The Chihuahua embodies the age-old saying, “great things come in small packages.” These pint-sized pups are packed with huge personalities! They’re spunky, charming, and bossy. And, boy, they sure are talkers! Chihuahuas aren’t shy in letting you know what they want. Also, don’t be fooled by their teeny tiny stature. Chihuahuas are great watch dogs due to their fearless and alert nature. If you want a purse-sized dog who is fiercely loyal and dedicated to you, look no further than the Chihuahua. This sensitive dog often forms a deep, unrelenting bond with their human.

The Stats

Good with kids: Yes…and no. Many friendly Chihuahuas are great with kids! But the kids? Ehh, that’s debatable… 😉 Tiny hands may not know how to properly (and gently) hold and handle this tiny, fragile dog. For a pup as small as a Chihuahua, roughhousing and falls can result in injury. So, it’s best if young children are closely supervised when playing with Chihuahuas.

Apartment or Ginormous yard: If you’re looking for an apartment-friendly dog, you hit the jackpot with Chis! Don’t fear though, they’re not coach potatoes. This fun-natured pup has loads of energy and needs regular exercise and stimulation to be happy. Nonetheless, Chihuahuas should not be kept outdoors all the time because…let’s just say they don’t look too different from a squirrel in a hawk’s eyes.

Salon needs: They come in two coat types: Smooth and long. The smooth-coated variation is low-maintenance, and only needs occasional brushing. The longhaired variety needs weekly brushing with a pin comb to avoid nasty tangles. Both types should be bathed every 1-2 months.

Activity level: Chihuahuas love to frolic and play. Due to their compact size, they can usually get enough exercise just playing in a small space. Trailing behind their human, and trying to keep up with our long legs can be a workout for these pups! Keep your Chihuahua happy and healthy with short walks, but avoid overexertion.

Smarty-Pants Degree In: Being charming! Chihuahuas are adorable and they know it. This intelligent breed may sometimes use their charm to manipulate their humans. To make sure your Chihuahua’s intelligence is directed appropriately (and their ego is in, er, check), it’s important to be a positive (but firm) leader. It can also help to challenge their brains with puzzle toys. Using a firm but gentle approach, Chihuahuas can win the number one spot in any training class!

Health FYIs: Chihuahuas are robust little dogs. Furthermore, these toy-sized pups tend to outlive larger breeds. Since Chihuahuas are prone to coldness and shivering due to their tiny bodies, they often have to throw on a sweater (it just so happens they often rock their wearables). They are also prone to low blood sugar, patellar luxation, heart issues, and eye disease (those beautiful eyes occasionally come with a price).

Fun Factoids

Chihuahuas are one of the oldest breeds of the Americas, with lineage pre-dating Columbus. Chihuahuas are also starlets in Hollywood! One particular dog, Gidget, was found in a kennel before starring in the iconic Taco Bell feedback commercials, Legally Blonde 2, and Geico ads. Talk about rags to riches!

Best toys:

A Chihuahua’s ideal date is with a squeaky chew toy. But, with a Chihuahua’s tiny stature comes a tiny airway. So, it’s crucial to only provide durable toys that do not present a choking hazard. It’s also important that their toys can fit in tiny jowls. These Hollywood and pop-culture themed toys are so fetch, and a perfect for your emerging influencer Chihuahua. Your little diva will also swipe right on Spiky Core Toys., since they have a hidden bonus squeaky toy inside! In your Chihuahua’s eyes, that’s a better plot twist than anything M. Night Shyamalan can deliver!

Best treats:

Chihuahua’s need a petite treat that’s proportional to their small frame. You can treat your pup to a miniature Thanksgiving meal with these nibble-sized Turkey Cranberry Treats.
