Looking for a breed of dog that will live a long time?
- The top ten are:
1. Boston Terrier
4. Llhasa Apso
5. Australian Shepherd
6. Jack Russell Terrier
9. Toy poodle
10. Shih Tzu
While the lifespan of every dog is reliant on many factors—including how well they’re cared for—there are some dog breeds that tend to reach older ages than others. Most of these long-living pups are petite in size, although there a couple larger-boned breeds that may surprise you!
This new favorite breed of urban dwellers is known for its playful spirit, curious nature, and people-oriented personality. Perpetually young at heart, the Boston Terrier also has a lifespan of 11 to 13 years. The biggest challenge will just be keeping them out of trouble for all that time.
Also topping the list of dogs that make the most noise, the Beagle’s playful spirit perhaps contributes to its longevity. With a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years, this medium-sized family dog will likely accompany you on innumerable walks, as well as (loudly) serenade you with over a decade’s worth of songs.
Due to its low risk for genetic diseases that can slow down other dog breeds, the Maltese is a good choice for those looking for a long-living companion. Their typical lifespan is 12 to 15 years, although with enough exercise and pampering, these silky-coated dogs have been known to live for years longer.
It seems logical that a thousand-year-old dog breed would also have an impressive average lifespan. At 12 to 15 years, the Lhasa Apso is another example of how small dogs dominate the senior canine club. Despite their elegant appearances, these pups will also diligently stand guard over your house for many years.
Who said only little dogs can live into uber-old age? Large enough to herd sheep or cattle, and athletic enough to bring home the gold in agility competitions, the Australian Shepherd has another impressive quality: their lifespan. Even at a potential 12 to 15 years, this frisky pup will still have energy for another round of fetch.
Jack Russell Terrier
With a whole bunch of bravery packed into one sturdy little body, the Jack Russell Terrier (otherwise known as the Parson Russell Terrier) is the superhero of dogs. Only a good fit for high-energy humans, this fearless and intelligent pup will be zooming around your yard for 13 to 15 years, if not significantly longer.
The infamous “weiner dog” is beloved for its stubby legs, sprightly personality, and sweet face. Yet, there’s one more reason to consider this pup as a candidate for your next best friend: these funny dogs will provide you with joy (and photo ops) for a long time. In fact, Dachshunds can easily live 12 to 16 years.
These tiny but mighty dogs are a national symbol of Mexico for good reason. Due to their fearlessness, bossy attitude, and clever minds, the Chihuahua wins hearts (and couch territory) everywhere. Plus, with the right care and attention, they can easily live from 14-16 years.
The smallest of all Poodles, the tyke-sized version of one of America’s most popular dogs is also renowned for its supremely long life. This smart and sporty little dog will play the role of your eager companion for 10 to 18 years. Just be prepared for nearly two decades of groomer’s bills!
This adorable “lion dog,” which originated in ancient China, is another small breed that’s notorious for its longevity. Since their days of strolling through royal palaces, they still remain the ultimate companion dog. In fact, the Shih Tzu could be your little lapsitter for 10 to 18 years.
