Dogs are more than cute, funny, and wonderful. They are also incredibly intuitive. So it should come as no surprise that when a woman becomes pregnant, the pooches closest to her can have strong reactions to the pregnancy.
There are different theories as to what happens when a dog has a hooman mom who is pregnant.
One theory has to do with a dog’s super sense of smell. Women who are pregnant have rapidly changing hormones and their usual scent may change. As dogs use their noses and scents to understand their world, it’s no wonder that if their favorite person’s scent changes suddenly, they are going to pick up on these changes.
Another theory suggests it has more to do with a dog noticing a change in their pregnant mama’s routines and emotions. While pregnant, women are more likely to experience changes in mood, posture, and routine (like extra potty breaks). Pups are creatures of habit and small changes in their daily routine are guaranteed to be noticed.
Whatever the reason our furry friends are able to notice pregnancies, they can exhibit a variety of different reactions in response. Some pups become overly protective of their owner and may even growl when others come near. Other pups will be very curious and follow their owner around, or even become more snuggly.
If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, you already know what a big change this is to your normal life and it’s important to make the transition as smooth as possible for your fur child as well. Adding a baby to the house can be a stressful and confusing time for your pup. You want to make sure your pooch is well trained and that you are meeting their emotional needs. If everything goes well you can be pretty sure your pup and new little one will be fast friends in no time.
