When it comes to being a big ol’ scaredy cat, there are two kinds of pups out there. One can literally sleep through a fireworks display, a bigger dog is no reason for them to back down, and when being disciplined, they give the sassiest side eye you’ve ever seen. The other ducks their head under the coffee table at the hint of a thunderstorm, and becomes a quivering mess if they hear a raised voice. Ok, so maybe those are just my own dogs, but some pooches are more prone to fear than others and some breeds are especially known for their scaredy-cat tendencies. Here are 5 of the most nervous pup breeds around:
1. The Dalmatian
The Dalmatian has been an extremely popular choice for families over the last 20 years thanks to the 101 Dalmatians movies. Spunky and exotic, the breed is great for those who are willing to spend time training, but they can be nervous and fearful, especially around children.
2. Shar-pei
Squishy face and fat rolls aside, Shar-pei’s were originally bred to be guard dogs, causing them to be extra suspicious and fearful, especially around strangers. Luckily, this can be prevented with lots of socialization as puppies.

3. Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are notorious for being a scaredy cat breed and can often be found shaking and shivering when frightened. They are especially nervous around bigger dogs, or when being reprimanded, so make sure you never use physical punishment on your Chihuahua (or any dog for that matter) and be cautious when introducing your Chi to new furriends.
4. Greyhounds
Unfortunately, since so many Greyhounds come from Greyhound farms and are meant for racing, they often don’t get much human interaction. Many of them grow up shy and timid which can be difficult to defeat. These insecurities can be overcome with trust and patience, but Greyhounds will also feel more comfortable in homes with other pups.
5. Whippet
Whippets are incredibly sensitive and can be emotionally damaged if treated poorly or placed into a chaotic home. Luckily, Whippets are intelligent, and their docile nature makes them easy to train. With gentle coaxing and lots of treats, a whippet makes a great companion for a quiet household.
