11-Year-Old Girl Moves Vet To Tears By Donating Her Birthday Money To Sick Puppy

An 11-year-old Pennsylvania girl impressed her community and moved one veterinarian to tears with her generosity this week. Instead of spending the days leading up to her birthday fantasizing about all the cake, presents, cash and candy coming her way, Liberty Miller decided to help a sick puppy instead.

Liberty asked her friends and family to donate cash rather than purchasing birthday gifts for her. She then delivered more than $250 to the Dillsburg Veterinary Center to fund the care of a pitiful pup that has been making international headlines.

Libre was rescued from a Lancaster County farm earlier this month. He was emaciated and suffering from sepsis plus a severe case of mange that left him virtually hairless. He is barely recognizable as a Boston Terrier.

When he first arrived at Dillsburg Veterinary Center, Libre was too weak to walk or even hold his head up for more than a few seconds.

Thanks to donations from folks like Liberty, and the exemplary care of Dr. Ivan Pryor, Libre has begun to improve. He is eating, barking and gaining strength, but still requires around the clock care.

Libre’s case has engulfed the Lancaster County SPCA in controversy since they announced that they would not press cruelty charges against the breeder who surrendered the pup. Protests have been staged outside the shelter and criticism from all over the world has flooded in calling for the breeder to be held accountable and the LCSPCA executive director to resign.

Amidst the sensationalism of the case, young Liberty’s selfless act stands out as a symbol of hope. Libre suffered neglect at the hands of his former owner, but his story has inspired love and compassion in a girl who represents the future of animal welfare. When asked how he felt about Liberty’s donation, Dr. Pryor choked back tears and said:

“I didn’t know Liberty before this, but I’m just really proud of her.”
