11 Reasons to Adopt an Adult Dog You Need to Know

Written by: Dr. Katy Nelson

This post is by a very special pup, Simba, AKA Mighty Little Lion. Simba was adopted as an adult by his mamz and papz. He’s here to share a few kibbles of info on why adult pups are seriously pawsome– and that adoptin’ is not just for puppies.

Simba’s 11 Reasons to Adopt an Adult Dog

11. Potty Training

Not all adult dogs are potty trained when you adopt them but an older dog has a mature bladder. You won’t need to take your new family member out every two hours to avoid accidents. I have never had an accident in the house, ever. I am obsessive about separating my toilet from my plate.

Listen here young pup… Let me tell you the secret to finding the pawfect place to poo…

10. What you see is what you get.

For dogs purebred and mixed, you can only estimate just how large they will be. If you don’t like surprises an adult dog is the way to go! I’m 10 lbs and I fit in a bag for easy travel! It makes living in New York and visiting family a piece of cake! Speaking of… I’m hungry.

Don’t forget the treat aisle.

9. Teething

Do you like your shoes with slobber and holes? Enough said. I don’t even go through open garbage when my parents are away! I know what type of behavior gets the most treats.

The puppy next door chewed his mamz’ Louboutins? Rookie mistake.

8. Sleeping schedule

It’s to be expected that any new family member will be a little weary of sleeping in their new home initially, but adult dogs have experience sleeping through till morning whereas puppies wake up when their bellies or bladders require their immediate attention. I love sleep, the more the better, bring on them zzzz’s!

Are you kidding me? I don’t wake up before 10 on a Saturday.

7. Baggage

Every dog comes with baggage, much like people, but when you commit to something you have already expected, it can make dog ownership almost feel like it came with a manual. For instance, I’m afraid of small children so a young couple like mom and dad were a perfect match for me!

Speaking of baggage, I’m coming to London with you, right?

6. Mind the Gap

Dog clothes do not expand with your dog. I have a fabulous wardrobe.

I know I look good.

5. They’re Super Snugglers!

And their snuggle excitement doesn’t result in messes. Mi bed es su bed, me in the middle!

4. Trick for a Treat?

Most adult dogs know commands and have the potential to be previously socialized. Anything for a treat!

Oh I had no idea you find the tonge-out-hoodie-clad-belly-show adorable…

3. Save some dough to spoil.

It actually costs less to adopt an adult dog whether you rescue or go to a breeder, even though their caretakers may have potentially put in more of the initial work. I got a BarkBox out of the deal!

2. I’m Vaccinated!

One less thing for you to worry about.

You heard it, disease-free ladies!

1. Every Dog needs a “Forever Home”

Whether you choose a puppy, an adult dog or either of the two with a special need, all dogs need a forever home. A forever home is a place where the adoptees are knowledgable and committed to the time and attention the dog they adopt needs. Being a hero is adopting a dog that you know you can commit a lifetime of care to.
