Strut to help save a life! Join thousands of people and their pets nationwide for the Best Friends Animal Society’s Strut Your Mutt. Together these walkers are striving to raise funds for homeless pets and over 180 rescues and shelters.
If you know anything about BarkPost, you know this: we’re dog people. Big, small, sloppy, lazy; whatever, a dog is a dog is a dog.

“But wait,” you’re probably thinking, “what about the 8 million dogs taken in by shelters a year? Don’t they deserve attention and love?”

Uh, duh. But even though our love for dogs goes beyond any rational level affection, love is not all you need (sorry John Lennon).

Luckily, organizations across the country are stepping up to the plate and making a difference in the lives of thousands of pups every day. We interviewed two of these pawsome organizations– learn a bit, donate and adopt! 🙂

The Old Dog House

Located in Jacksonville, Florida, Old Dog Houseisn’t a shelter in the sense of having a brick and mortar facility. Instead, they rely on a network of foster homes to take in a care for their rescued dogs.

Also unique to Old Dog House is their focus on…you guessed it, old dogs!

“The Humane Society was not no kill,” said Kim Stordahl, President and Co-founder of Old Dog House, “unfortunately age was a determining factor in not being adoptable.”

Psh, that’s ridiculous. Who doesn’t love an old, wise pup?

“[A senior dog’s] personality is developed,” said Kim, “what you see is what you get. There are no surprises on how big they’re going to be, they generally have their manners and know how to live in a home.”

Since its founding in 2006, The Old Dog House has given over 50 dogs a second chance at a dignified life. But, of course, Kim said, “We wish that was more like 500.”

Do you wish that number were closer to 500? Of course you do. But The Old Dog House is entirely supported by their local community and charitable donations so they need your help!

PAWS Shelter and Humane Society

Saving a life takes more than one kind soul– it takes a community. For shelters like PAWS Shelter and Humane Society, that truism rings as true as the collar of an overactive pup on the beach.

Since 1986, PAWS has worked hard to integrate themselves into all facets of life in Kyle, Texas, working with schools, churches, and even prisons to make the world a more humane world for all.

“PAWS is built and supported by the Kyle community,” said Monica Dangler, Shelter Director at PAWS. “It’s a huge part of what we do.”

Take the PAWS’ Cell Dog Program for example. Every month, PAWS’ dogs are carefully selected and cared for by inmates at Kyle Correctional Center. Through education, training and hands-on interaction this program is not only a transformative experience for pups, but also inmates and society as a whole.

PAWS Office Manger and Foster/Adoptions Counselor recounted the story of Jaeger, a handsome dog with a history of aggression who was transformed through the Cell Dog Program and eventually found his forever home. Yay!

Look at this pic of Jaeger and tell me you don’t want to help PAWS save hundreds of other dogs just like him. Seriously, look at that face!
