Animal Activists Rejoice As Detroit Gets Its First No-Kill Shelter

Detroit Dog Rescue is going to change the lives of its city’s pups. The rescue network just opened as the city’s first no-kill shelter. This is wonderful news, since the high kill rate shelters can be devastating, and now many dogs will be given a second chance to find a home. Since the shelter began in 2011, they have placed 650 pups in homes. Recently, they acquired their state permit to operate as a no-kill shelter.

The shelter houses mostly Pit Bulls and will have between 40 and 60 pups at a given time. Detroit Dog Rescue is founded by Detroit rapper Daniel “Hush” Carlisle and is funded by private donations.

By working closely with the city, the shelter will be able to raise visibility and awareness for these pups. And perhaps this will inspire other shelters to take a no-kill stance. Executive director, Kristina Rinaldi, said that the shelter aims to take care of dogs that are high risk for being unadoptable. Many dogs are rescued from gun shootings, dog baiting, and violence. These pups have been victims and now they’re supported in concentrated, thoughtful advocacy.

Note, the shelter will not be open to the public but will have dog adoptions every other weekend. If you’re looking for a new furry family member, consider fostering and adoption. If you would like to get more involved, please contact the shelter for volunteer and outreach opportunities!
