Dog Waiting For Weeks Alone Can’t Understand Why His Human Hasn’t Come Back

About two weeks ago, a dog watched his human leave for work one night as usual. He didn’t realize, of course, that the convenience store clerk was killed by a pair of armed robbers that same night. Every day since then has been a marathon of greeting each car that drives into the apartment complex, just to see if one of them contains his best friend.

“[W]hen he would realize that it was not his owner’s car,” says Cassandra Eubanks, who lives nearby, “he would just stand there and look helpless.” Until now, the dog had tried frantically to find his person who never came home.

He had avoided neighbors attempting to help, and who had graciously been providing food and water. When a woman named Maranda Perez arrived in response to a request on social media, he was still unsure how to react. Perez tells ABC 13:

It just broke my heart to hear that the poor animal lost his owner, his best friend. […] He was still very shaken-up whenever I touched him.

Perez and her own dog did their best to coax the poor pup closer. After nearly an hour of patience and lots of treats, she managed to get a leash on him and lead him to her car. The dog tried hard to stay, perhaps just in case his owner finally returned, but he eventually agreed to go along.

Perez will foster him for a week, after which the victim’s brother will adopt the dog as his own. With a little trust and the freedom to let go, we hope this dog will learn to come out of his shell and enjoy life once more.
