Toby has the unique ability to sniff double the butts with his schnoz, but adopters just couldn’t look past the deformity to see his beautiful personality.
With no interested families, he was slated to be put down. That is, before Todd Ray, founder of the Venice Beach Freakshow, volunteered to take him home.
What may have been a quick decision proved to be one of his best. Ray tells BBC:
Everyone that meets Toby loves him. The sad thing is that, at this time, people will let a two-nosed dog get put down before they will adopt him—only because he looks different.
In addition to owning the world’s largest collection of two-headed animals, Ray’s Freakshow (now also an unscripted television show by the same name) celebrates the “weird” and extraordinary. He’s always been drawn to the freaks of the world, but he uses the term affectionately.
“There’s no such thing as normal,” he says in a Rolling Stone article. “Normal is dead. We are now in a culture of self-expression.”
Toby joins an eccentric family of two-tailed iguanas, two-headed snakes, and five-legged frogs, but our double vision says more than meets the eye. Because the pup has no scar tissue, it’s likely he was born with that sniffer, which is actually one nose split in two.
While other rare breeds are known to flaunt their double noses, Toby’s is an anomaly. His vet ensures Ray that the pup is in “perfect health,” and he’s a big lover boy with a huge fondness for fetch.
This furry “freak” has never met a stranger, and he’s clearly loving life with a family who adores him for his differences.
