It’s sad but true that some of the most horrific cases of neglect produce extraordinarily happy and forgiving dogs. The only difference between the ones who don’t make it and the ones who do is the dedication and patience of rescue workers, and we are lucky to hear the stories of dogs taken into their capable hands.
Evie’s past is a real mystery, but her body coated in a “blanket of ticks” and the chain she dragged around her neck indicate an escape from the worst neglect imaginable. She was picked up by a rural shelter and rushed to a nearby animal hospital.
A Purposeful Rescue, who became the loving guardians of Evie, said:
“Evangeline” was rushed to Bakersfield Vet Hospital because she was so anaemic. Her gums were “translucent” instead of pink. Preliminary lab work showed her blood was “like water,” according to the vet. The hoard of ticks have been sucking the life out of her, literally.
They continued, explaining that Evie was hospitalized and received a blood transfusion and oxygen in addition to antibiotics and lots of fluids. She was balancing on the edge of death. With her system just a bit stronger, rescuers moved this sweet girl to their own vet to continue treatment.
In the days following, vets and rescue workers gave Evie a much-needed bath and spent over an hour removing the ticks. There were so many that it was impossible to get them all, but she got a couple more good baths to finish the job. “We cannot even imagine the pain she feels,” they said, “her entire body is scabbed.”
Despite her poor condition, Evie was eating and moving around, and her blood work showed signs of improvement regarding her anemia. She’s even had her own photoshoot by the talented Trisha Harrison to show off the brand new Evie!
And look at all the good it’s done her! (Those butt wiggles!)

Today, Evie is a Purposeful Rescue Alum with a family who loves and adores her, and I’d bet that even she didn’t guess it could be this good.
