As volcanic ash rains down from the Chilean skies, glimmers of hope have begun to break through the darkness of disaster. While Calbuco Volcano prepared to erupt for the third time in one week, video emerged from the hard-hit town of Ensenada—miraculous video showing a woman reuniting with her dog lost during last week’s evacuation.
The unidentified woman was allowed back in the area to search for the pup, and it took a week of anguished digging to produce this happy ending. But it’s certain this pup won’t be the only lucky one to rejoin his human: volunteers have ushered at least 500 dogs (and counting!) to safety.
As the volcano continues its unstable ways, it’s unclear when residents can return. But all the lost pups are being housed and treated until they can rejoin their parents.
