One UK girl has taken the Christmas spirit to a whole new level. She asked that her parents and classmates help her collect food and bedding for the 80 dogs who will be spending the holidays at City Dogs Home in Bucknall. To top it off, 9 year old Elcie-May Deakin-Walley chose to do this instead of receiving presents for herself!

Marti Walley is incredibly proud of her daughter’s determination. Not only did Elcie-May follow through on her promise to donate 12 cans of dog food that her parents purchased in place of her own Christmas gifts, she took her mission even further. The young girl handed out flyers at her elementary school and sold loom bracelets in the local pub. All tolled, she delivered 330 pounds of food and blankets to the City Dogs Home this Saturday!

Elcie-May is a devoted animal lover and hopes to become a veterinarian or dog trainer when she grows up. She has three dogs of her own. Two Schnauzers named Misty and Tiny, and a rescued German Shepherd named Connie. Connie was found abandoned and tied to a tree in poor condition 4 years ago. Elcie-May’s dad, Andrew Deakin, thinks the experience of nurturing Connie back to health had a profound impact on his daughter, and inspired her to help other dogs in need.

Vicky Phillips, who is the manager at the local shelter, is grateful for Elcie-May’s generosity at a time of year when many make the decision to abandon their pets, overwhelming local shelters. She said:

Every little bit counts. Elcie-May has been lovely. The bedding, especially, is something we really needed.

Although Elcie-May is happy with what she has achieved to help the pups of City Dogs Home, she is not ready to rest just yet. She has already begun planning an even bigger collection drive for the shelter next Christmas! She is one pawesome girl!
