When you brew a cup of coffee from Grounds & Hounds, a caffeine kick isn’t the only perk you’ll get. The company, founded by Jordan Karcher, uses fair trade organic beans from the best growing regions around the world, and 20% of all profits go to local dog rescues and no-kill animal shelters across the country.
Having grown up with Dalmatians, Karcher’s been a dog lover for as long as he can remember, and a coffee connoisseur since he was a teenager. The initial idea to marry his two passions came in 2010, but the driving force for Grounds & Hounds came two years later in the form of a mutt muse named Molly.
On the Grounds & Hounds’ website, Karcher remembers the time he first met his speckled pup.
I unexpectedly stumbled upon a dog adoption operating on the side of Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, CA.I was in no way planning, or prepared to adopt a rescue animal when I left the house that morning, but when a malnourished, brown and white, Dalmatian crawled into my lap, it was clear that I would be welcoming a new member to my family. She immediately became the center of my life and I cannot imagine a day without her.
Karcher says adopting Molly was the best decision he’s ever made. The gratification and joy she brought into his life is what motivated Karcher to turn Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co. into a reality.
Karcher had Molly while he was working towards his MBA at Notre Dame, and every morning he looked forward to two things: smooches from Molly and sips of Joe. He told BarkPost that the concept of waking up with your best friend, and spending some quality time in peace, before “the world punches you in the face,” was something he wanted Grounds & Hounds to recognize and celebrate. Before he graduated, Karcher launched the company and chose its charming slogan, “Every pound saves a hound.” And Karcher really puts his money where his snout is, by supporting various rescue partners in cities across the United States.
Karcher is obviously passionate about helping dogs, so it’s no surprise that Karcher refers to his customers as “superheroes.” He is adamant that even the simple act of brewing a cup of coffee, done with intention and thought, can make a difference in the world, and in the case of Grounds & Hounds, it can save a pup’s life. Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co. customers are definitely superheroes, but it’s Jordan Karcher who’s leading the pack.
