Warning: this content may be upsetting to some readers.

When you first get a look at the inspirational dog featured in this post, your instinct may be to turn away. The abuse she has suffered has left her permanently disfigured, and as animal lovers, it pains us to see the cruelty some humans are capable of. But Khalessi is an indomitable spirit. She has overcome her history of torture and is thriving in the present. Her beautiful face should make us smile, not turn away.

Khalessi Pit Bull Learns To Walk

You may already be familiar with the story of Khaleesi, the scorned Targaryen Queen on an epic quest to reclaim her kingd – WAIT MY BAD SORRY WRONG QUEEN.

Let me try that again: You may already be familiar with the story of Khalessi, the severely abused (an understatement if there ever was one) Pit Bull who fought against all odds to reclaim her puppyhood. Khalessi was reported to Orlando animal services after being found “dumped” in a neighbor’s yard.

Her injuries were not only extensive, but had culminated over the course of her life. Besides missing half of her face, Khalessi was found completely emaciated and suffered from several broken ribs and nearly useless back legs due to years of abuse and torture. It’s truly sickening to think about what some people are capable of doing to animals.

But Khalessi is a perfect example of the “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” idiom. In the 6 months that she has been in the care of Passion 4 Pits founder Stephanie Paquin, Khalessi has blown everyone away with her lovable, attention-seeking demeanor.

What Khalessi has been through has not changed how she views people, and she looks for love around every corner. She is even in the process of helping other dogs who are victims of animal cruelty with her Khalessi’s Warriors fundraiser, which exclusively sent all donations to abused and neglected dogs like Khalessi. While that fundraiser has closed, you can still help by donating to Passion 4 Pits.

After extensive care and facial reconstruction, Khalessi is back on her feet again and acting like the pup she was born to be. She’s able to walk and almost run now, thanks to the love and care she received from her doctors and caretakers.

It’s unfortunate that not all cases like this end in survival, and even more unfortunate that these cases exist at all. (I’m looking at you, humans.) But Khalessi has served as a source of inspiration for animal rights activists and Pit Bull lovers everywhere. She is one. Tough. Lady. And we aren’t going to stop rooting for her anytime soon. Khalessi is our RIGHTFUL QUEEN.
