After 15.5 years enjoying the company of their sweet, affectionate, and down-to-the-bone loyal Shepherd named Lena, this family posted a farewell tribute to their best friend for the world to see.
Only, it’s Lena who “wrote” the post—and let me tell you, this means more tears for the rest of us. Fair warning: if you are a) at work, or b) literally anywhere in public, you may want to prepare yourself. People might start to worry if they see you crying at your desk.
Okay. Meet Lena.
She’s a pretty cool dog with a pretty steady paw on the keyboard. Alongside a photo of her big, happy grin, she introduces her story:
Unfortunately, yesterday I started my forever nap. Don’t be sad, because I was a happy 15.5 years old! I want to share with you how I spent my last 24 hours. It was a lot of fun.
She begins with a tale of seasons passed…
First of all, Merry Christmas to all of you out there. I always loved the holidays. It always meant new, awesome tasting foods for me, and of course toys. I’m disappointed I won’t see one this year, but loved the ones I did have.
… and a recollection of all the great times she spent with her humans. From extravagant hiking trips to rousing games of disc golf, Lena has a lot to thank her family for. We’d bet they’re thanking her for even more.
In fact, Lena wanted to make sure everyone knew just how much she loved her mom and dad.
Yep, that would be these guys.
They’re pretty great, if she does say so herself. We’d have a hard time disagreeing. Lena tells us:
Part of my happy time in my last day came from cuddling. I loved giving kisses, even to my Dad’s rough beard.
And we can’t forget about Mom…
I loved Mom’s lap. I will miss it soooo much!
Yeah, they’re both wonderful humans. And they’re almost as good at snuggling as Lena is, but you didn’t hear that from me. Even when they insisted on bath time, Lena couldn’t bring herself to argue:
My parents know I don’t like baths during them, but they know how happy I am afterwards to be clean and smelling great. Must do before your forever nap. 10/10, would recommend.
And through it all, Lena never once forgot about all her other human friends who really made her life whole:
I spent a lot of time doing this this past weekend, as I waited for all of my friends to come visit. I loved seeing people make the walk up to our house!
There are many who had a hand in making Lena’s years the best they could possibly be. When a dog’s presence changes your own life so completely, it’s hard not to shout it from the rooftops: WE LOVE OUR DOGS! As the Roger Caras quote goes… “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”
