Madrid’s stray and abandoned animals will no longer be euthanized, according to a new law passed by the city’s government earlier this month.

“Today is one of the happiest days of our lives,” said Nacho Paunero, president of animal rights organization El Refugio. “[Our organization] has been fighting for 19 years to make Madrid and the surrounding areas no-kill. We said we would never stop fighting until accomplishing our goal and we have finally done it!”

Paunero and El Refugio have been fighting for this breakthrough since last summer in hopes that all of Madrid’s homeless animals would be protected. Under the new law, no shelter animal will be euthanized.

Madrid’s government officials faced backlash from animal lovers all over the world last year after euthanizing Excalibur, the dog of Ebola patient Teresa Romero.
