A Denver, Colorado man has garnered attention online and in his community for rescuing senior dogs and just about any other species in need. His property is home to 10 dogs, 2 cats, a pair each of chickens, ducks and pigeons, a rabbit, a pond full of koi fish, and one very spoiled diva of a pig by the name of Bikini. As you might expect, the unusual pack has quite an Instagram following.
Steve Greig always grew up with lots of animals around, but it wasn’t until he experienced the loss a particularly beloved pet that he began his incredible mission of rescue. Devastated by the tragedy, he decided that he would honor his fur friend’s memory by bringing home the “least adoptable dog” from the local shelter. Greig told The Dodo‘s Zainab Akande:
I decided that the only way I would feel better was if something good happened that probably wouldn’t have happened if he had not died.”
That un-adoptable dog ended up being a 12 year-old Chihuahua named Eeyore with bad joints and a heart murmur. Once Eeyore was settled, Greig never looked back. Eight of the dogs in the home belong to Greig, while the other two are pets of his sister and a roommate.
The majority of his pups are seniors and are what shelters consider difficult placements. Each day, Greig is up before the sun preparing meals and medications for his mostly geriatric pack, as well as tending to his less conventional pets.
(Seniors) are just wiser animals. You kind of know what you want out of life once you become a certain age. These dogs know who they are and it’s easy to develop a relationship with a person or pet who knows who they are.
Believe it or not, Greig actually manages to maintain a regular full-time job as an accountant despite his massive responsibilities at home. After breakfast, he wrangles up all 10 dogs for their morning walk – all together at the same time! Greig even comes home at lunch each day to let the dogs out for a potty break.
After I posted the pic last week getting ready for our walk several people asked to see a video. This was taken about a year ago so Josh hadn't come to live with me yet and Ignatius was still alive. Other than that it's all the regular crew. Notice Phyllis in the backpack and Edna's just out of the shelter haircut. #octodad #wolfgang2242
Bikini the persnickety pig insists on taking her “walks” by wagon. Her previous owner had to give her up because of landlord issues. Bikini was already housebroken and had experience being around dogs according to her previous owner. She gets along great with Greig’s entire pack, but her BFF is Enoch the Irish Wolfhound. Greig suspects that Bikini is unaware of her porcine status. In her big, bristly head she thinks she’s just one of the dogs.
A man walking 10 dogs was bound to draw some attention from the locals. Greig’s pet rabbit, Stewart, was likely abandoned at his home because the previous owner knew he would be well cared for there. Greig found the large grey and white bunny sitting calmly on his front lawn one morning. At first he didn’t know what to do with him, but Stewart proved to be a perfect addition. He has become just another creature mingling with the gang inside the house. He snuggles in bed with Bikini and Oprah the chicken, or crams onto the couch for nap time with his canine siblings.
It may seem like a motley menagerie, but Greig wouldn’t have it any other way. He told The Dodo that he is currently maxed out in the pet department, but has every intention of continuing to take in senior rescues and random farm animals when members of his pack pass away.
