Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown has established the first ever New York City DA’s unit dedicated to prosecuting crimes against animals.

New York already has a strong system in place for investigating animal abuse – the ASPCA partnered with NYPD in 2014 to help respond to calls involving animals and care for the victims.
The new unit will serve to educate the public about recognizing and preventing crimes against animals as well as aid in the investigations. Attorney Nicoletta Caferri will be leading the new department. She feels that Judge Brown’s decision will help residents of Queens County feel safer and show potential abusers that animal cruelty will not be taken lightly.
Caferri told NY Daily News:
Anyone who can treat an animal in a horrific way is certainly capable and only a step away from treating people in an equally violent and negligent manner.
Caferri worked on the high profile case of Brewster, a Boxer found emaciated and left for dead in Queens Park. Brewster’s owner was arrested and the dog was placed with a new family where he is thriving. Judge Brown can be seen in the top photo making the acquaintance of a much healthier, happier Brewster.
Stacy Wolfe, Esq., Senior Vice President of the ASPCA’s Anti-Cruelty Group is also encouraged by the decision. She said:
It will undoubtedly strengthen the outstanding enforcement and animal care work already being done daily through the NYPD-ASPCA partnership and send a strong message that crimes against animals will not be tolerated in our city.
