As the dogs leapt from the doors of the Mercedes-Benz and onto the 710 Freeway, their tails were wagging. The three 4-month-old Pit Bull mix puppies, their mom, and two other adult females were innocent bystanders tangled up in a police car chase that took them from Orange County toward Long Beach, California, where they were finally picked up, a bit scared and confused, but otherwise – miraculously – unscathed.

This gives a whole new meaning to the term "PIT maneuver."When a police chase ended on the 710 Freeway, another one…

The driver, who was ultimately identified as Santa Ana resident Tiffini Tobe, was approached by police on Monday night, when she was going 30 miles an hour on the shoulder of the highway. After speeding up to evade the officers, she was finally stopped sixty suspenseful minutes later.

When Ms. Tobe was taken into custody, two of the females and one puppy flew out the door and onto the highway, where they ran hither and thither in bewilderment. At one point, the police, fearing the dogs, pulled out their guns, but it soon became clear the dogs were gentle and friendly, even under the exceedingly stressful circumstances. After the freeway was briefly shut down, all six were rescued and turned in to Long Beach Animal Care Services, where they are being tended to right now.

In Tobe’s residence in La Habra, it is illegal to keep more than four dogs in one household, so it’s unclear whether or not the dogs have a safe place to call home. The team at the shelter is in the process of trying to identify possible owners, but if in six weeks, no one has come forward, the dogs will be considered abandoned and will be available for adoption. Ms. Tobe will likely serve some jail time for driving under the influence and felony evasion.

As of this writing, the dogs are recuperating and waiting at the shelter. The puppies are now with their mother, and the other two older dogs have their own runs. They all have sweet dispositions, Outreach Coordinator Kelly Miott tells BarkPost, and updates regarding possible adoption will be posted on their Facebook page as the story develops.

One thing’s for sure: these dogs are survivors, and they deserve a happy, stress-free life from this day forward. Donations to the shelter where they are living can be made here.
