“Freeway Frida” was recently rescued by police in Galt, California after spending five weeks on the median of Highway 99. A driver had initially spotted the German Shepherd jump or fall from a pickup truck, Officer Silvia Coelho tells ABC News, and calls poured in every day since from passersby who saw an “injured dog.”

Frida spent over a month evading capture, perhaps waiting for her owner to return, or because she couldn’t find her way out of traffic. Coehlo says she was “like a ghost dog”—police never saw her, no matter how many times they went out to check.

On Saturday, May 14, Coehlo “got lucky” when she spotted Ms. Freeway with the help of a fellow officer and a California Highway Patrol Officer. Frida is now in the care of the VCA Bradshaw Animal Hospital in Elk Grove, California.

Says Coehlo:

She was really skinny and malnourished when we first brought her in, but she’s on the mend, and she’s doing awesome. Though she was skittish at first, she’s starting to relax now.

Frida’s veterinarian, Dr. Mike Johnson, is shocked that she not only survived the fall onto the highway, but also that she managed to stay alive over a month after that point. She suffered a broken leg and possible damage to her tendons, as well as malnutrition and dehydration, and will undergo surgery soon to have the fracture repaired.

She’s “a really lovely little dog,” Dr. Johnson tells The Sacramento Bee, and he expects she will make a full recovery.

As for Frida’s owner, no one has come forward to claim her yet and she has no microchip. But that doesn’t mean she’s without a home—Officer Coehlo says she “just might have to adopt her,” and that Frida’s “got a strong heart and a strong will for surviving out on that median for five weeks. She’s truly amazing.”
