The Humane Society of the United States rescued 148 dogs, of a variety of breeds, from a home in Ohio earlier this month. Sadly, hoarding situations are not as uncommon as one might think, but this one was especially startling for rescuers.
Rotting deer carcasses were the only food source for the dogs and cats on the premises. There was very little water, as well.
Chris Schindler, the Humane Society’s Director of Animal Crimes, says that he believes this situation started out with someone trying to rescue animals, but then it got out of control and dangerous.
“The animals were living in waste, the animals had no access to water. The primary food source was rotten, rancid deer carcasses that not only were freely out on the property, they were in enclosures, in their dog food bowls, if they had bowls. It was really horrendous.
Saving these animals has become a multi-organization effort with the California based Red Rover nonprofit stepping in to help house and care for many of the animals.
Almost all of the dogs suffer from medical conditions and will need considerable care before they will be up for adoption. You can help them by donating to Red Rover’s emergency fund.
