The Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center was forced to close on August 15th. Why? BECAUSE THEY RAN OUT OF PETS! Oh. My. Dog.
Thousands of critters in shelters all over the United States were adopted as a result of the annual Clear the Shelters event. For one day, participating shelters waived their adoption fees, and folks came out in droves to adopt.
So many people turned out to the event that at least 11 shelters in Texas adopted out every single little buddy. Every pet left the shelter spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. Volunteers were on hand to educate families bringing home pets on how to be responsible pawrents.
From the Dallas Animal Services Facebook page:
“We had a lot of families who came out together, spent an hour or more waiting in line in the hot sun, then spent hours picking out the right pet, talked to the staff and volunteers, asked good questions, and then waited in yet another line to adopt. They were great people.”
The shelter even posted a photo of all the empty cages after the event!
Though this event was wildly successful, there are still thousands of pets who don’t make it out of the shelter every year. If you’re looking to add to, or start your family with a fuzzbutt, check out your local shelter and make a friend for life!
