Cosmetic Surgeon Gives Up Everything To Put An End To Singapore’s Stray Dog Epidemic

I’m sure your cosmetic surgeon is good, but there’s no way they’re as good as Dr. Siew Tuck Wah. Even as a doctor at the renowned Sloane Clinic for aesthetic medicine, he took time out of his busy surgical schedule to work with SOSD Singapore (Save Our Street Dogs), an organization dedicated to rescuing and finding families for Singapore’s overwhelming population of homeless dogs.

Does YOUR cosmetic surgeon do this? Cause mine doesn't. (Sorry, Dr. Miller.)

Since 2012, Dr. Siew has served as SOSD’s president, somehow balancing his work as a doctor with his work as a dog-saver. As SOSD’s reach grew, its operational expenses — sometimes totaling $40,000 per month — also continued to rise. Dr. Siew wanted to commit himself further to the cause, but struggled to find the time because of his clinical work. So earlier this year, he announced that he would be leaving cosmetic medicine to focus entirely on SOSD Singapore’s efforts.

Dr. Siew chose to leave his glam life as a cosmetic surgeon to help homeless (but also glam) pups like this one.

In his Facebook post announcing this news, Dr. Siew admitted that leaving his comfortable lifestyle for an uncertain one would undoubtedly be a challenge, but as he put it:

The world can do with one less doctor who makes people more beautiful…but SOSD cannot do without this final push.

Clearly this dog agrees.

Singapore’s homeless pup population is serious. There are roughly 5,000 stray dogs roaming the city in search of food, healthcare, and a loving home. As the city continues to urbanize, these street dogs are viewed by some in a negative light, rather than unlucky animals that simply need help. They are often inhumanely treated, abused and killed.

Luckily, people like Dr. Siew and organizations like SOSD Singapore are committed to giving these dogs a fighting chance. To learn more, visit SOSD Singapore’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
