15 Ways Dogs Teach You To Be More Mindful In Your Daily Life

Have you noticed how your dog always wants to stop and smell the same spots, and how the same route you take everyday never seems to get old for ’em?

As I started working with and practicing Mindfulness this fall I realized our dogs are Mindfulness Gurus and that there’s a lot that we can learn from them.

Being mindful means being present in your life as it unfolds, without judging. Many of us have this idea that life is happening in the future, but life isn’t a rehearsal – this is it. Life is happening right now. Let your dog teach you how to mindfully live it!

1. Live in the moment

Your dog doesn’t care about the past, or worry about the future. They live in the present, and they enjoy it!

2. Don’t multitask

Dogs do one thing at a time. It doesn’t matter if they’re good or bad at it, they just focus on the task at hand.

3. Don’t judge

Dogs don’t care about your race, religion, what’s in your bank account or what you wear.

4. Accept!

Dog’s accept who they are, and who you are. Your strengths and weaknesses. Even if you’re a cat. Most of the time.

5. Appreciate!

Were you gone for a minute, an hour or a week? Doesn’t matter. Seeing you will never get old for your dog.

6. Learn to let go.

If the toy is broken. Let it go. (Some dogs need to practice this too.)

7. Take a chance .

Dogs are not afraid to be rejected. Why would they? They’re lovable, and so are you.

8. Your voice matters

Speak your mind! Try this strategy instead of barking.

9. Ask for help.

Sometimes we fall – let someone help you up again.

10. Be kind to yourself

A dog that fails a trick, is still a happy dog thinking he deserves that treat. Don’t beat yourself up!

11. Don’t hold grudges

Your dog will never blame you for having to prioritize someone or something else. The time you spend together is what matters, not the time you spend apart.

12. Slow down

Going somewhere? Look around you, smell the air, feel the ground underneath your feet. But wear shoes, it’s cold outside.


13. Focus on the good

Bad experiences tend to stay with people longer than the good ones, as for a dog, the fun and exciting parts of life are much more dominant. Pay attention to all the fun stuff happening today!

14. Think less, feel more.

Humans have a habit of thinking about what we’re feeling instead of recognizing the actual feeling in our bodies.
Bruce Lee said: “Don’t think. FEEL. It’s like a finger pointing at the moon. Do not concentrate on the finger, or you will miss all of the heavenly glory.”

15. Love without reason

Dogs love you, because they love you. They don’t need a reason to love.
