Tell us the truth – Have you ever imagined what fantastic imaginary adventures your dog would go on if given the opportunity? If you’re illustrator and author Maira Kalman, there’s no doubt about it.
Kalman who is originally from Tel Aviv, Israel moved to New York City in 1954 as a child. As an adult she married famed Hungarian-American graphic designer, Tibor Kalman. Maira and Tibor ran the successful design company M&Co. for many years until Tibor tragically passed away from cancer in 1999. He may be gone, but his profound effect on the art world will never be forgotten.
When Tibor took ill, a friend suggested getting a dog and that is how Pete came into their lives. Kalman’s love for Pete evolved into a book entitled Beloved Dog.
Pete, along with Kalman’s other beloved dog, Max Stravinsky, have become staples in her work over the years. Max is not just a dog but a dog poet, a “bohemian beagle”, if you will.
Here are just a few of the adventures that Max goes on:
In Max Makes A Million, Max is out and about in NYC. Although he lives in the Big Apple, Max dreams of Paris. It’s hard out there for a poet, but there are some perks to living in the concrete jungle. Through Max’s eyes we see why New York is truly the city that never sleeps.
In Ooh-la-la (Max in Love), Max Stravinsky finally gets to travel to Paris! While in one of the most romantic cities in the world, Max ponders the meaning of amour. He wanders the streets and sees the sights, but feels lonely as a new pup in town. Then one night viola! Max is struck by Cupid’s arrow when he meets the exquisite Crêpes Suzette!
For the cinephiles out there, Max in Hollywood, Baby is the perfect book for you. It chronicles Max’s new adventure in the City of Angels. With his new bride by his side, Max attempts to conquer the film world. Lights, Camera, Action!
In Swami on Rye (Max In India) Max searches for his “third eye” in India. In this book, Max takes his quest for existential enlightenment to the next level while traveling through India. What brought on Max’s quest to understand more about life’s greatest mysteries? Crêpes Suzette is expecting puppies!
One of the most beautiful aspects of Kalman’s work is the poignant manner in which she conveys her love for her divine canine companions. No matter your age, Kalman’s books are true literary treasures!
For the parents out there – These fun books work great as bedtime stories for your kids – whether they have fur or not! 😉
