The Most Basic Thing I Forgot In My Quest To Keep My Dog Healthy

I’ve had my pup-mate Benji since October 2014 and I can’t imagine my life without him! The last 7 months have been a learning process. Figuring out the best foods for him, what treats he should and should not be given, making sure he gets his meds on time, the best toys for his personality and so much more! After all, I want him to live his best, healthiest and longest life possible.

However, turns out that I forgot about the most important and basic thing that’s the first step to a yappy and healthy pup — Water. Y’know that thing that we need for basic sustenance. That thing that makes up around 60% of us, and makes up 80% of your dog.

Often an afterthought, I was made aware that I should be deliberately thinking about Benji’s daily water intake. I didn’t even know that dogs need one ounce of water per pound of body weight, each day.

Important hydration information

Just like us, dogs are also susceptible to kidney diseases and UTIs if not properly hydrated. You can do a quick at home hydration check by following the video below:

It’s instinctual for animals to seek out fresh, flowing water to stay hydrated. Why? because stagnant or standing water can be a potential breeding ground for bacteria, not to mention bits and pieces of dust, hair, food etc.

How do you ensure that your dog is getting the freshest water consistently? I delved into the myriad of options and found that most vets recommend water fountains. The flowing movement of fountains allows oxygen to circulate in the water which prevents growth of bacteria, while the activated carbon filters out unappealing odors and tastes.

You can check out the fun and functional line of PetSafe® Drinkwell® fountains here.

If something as basic and simple as water can work wonders to maintain your pup’s overall health, why not make sure we’re doing it right?
