Have you ever looked at a row of bikes and thought, art? Well that is exactly what designer and multidisciplinary artist Nirit Levav thought when seeing used bike parts and decided that making adorable and life size sculptures of dogs fit the recycled material.
Her collection is called “Unchained” and mainly uses recycled bike chains to create these sculptures. Nirit’s inspiration for the series came after a, “…visit to the bike repair shop, when the artist looked at the parts the owner intended to throw away and decided to create a statue of a dog (a Rottweiler) out of bicycle chains.”
In describing her sculptures Levav wrote that she wanted to “capture the dogs’ gentleness and sensitivity…despite the use of scrap metal.” And capture she did! When looking at each individual piece you can see a range of emotion, yes, even in chain form! From playful to pensive she made sure that each individual dog is just as unique in expression and form as a pup you would meet on the street.
Nirit’s collection is available on Etsy and each piece is somehow connected to Niri. Inspiration can come in any form like replicating her sisters’ dog or a neighbor. Each sculpture has a personal note about the piece making it feel like you are adopting this piece of art.
