When you’ve been with your dog as long as I have (11 years this month) the pressure to keep things fresh can be daunting. You’ve been together so long that you can begin to feel like there are no surprises anymore, that you know everything there is to know about them.
You can either feel that way, or you can choose to embrace the comfortability of a long-time love. You don’t have to brave the crowds or go to a huge fuss to make the one you adore feel special. Follow these simple steps for a cozy ladies’ night at home!
1. Reunited And It Feels So Good
Even though we’ve probably gone through the process over 4,000 times, Oona and I still greet each other every time we’re reunited with the same excitement that we had in the beginning. There’s no better feeling than coming home to someone who’s just as psyched to see you as you are to see them.
2. Set the Scene
Being apart from each other all day is stressful stuff, I like to create a relaxed mood so we can just let the tension dissolve as we sit down for a delicious dinner.
3. Praise You Like I Should
I recommend taking this opportunity to tell your pup all of the reasons you’re thankful for them. You don’t have to dissolve into a puddle of mush, but Valentine’s Day is all about that L-O-V-E so be don’t be stingy with the affection. Oona and I also took this time to sing some songs together.
4. Chow Down
Time for eats! Although I enjoy cooking, I didn’t want to spend a bunch of time in the kitchen and end up missing out on Q.T. with my cutie. Seamless to the rescue! For me: Indian food (duh, because it’s delicious but also because the delivery guy just had a baby and I’ve been wanting to find out if it’s a boy or a girl. Spoiler alert: it’s a girl!) and for Oona: a heaping helping of her beloved Crockpot Dog Food. Happy bellies all around.
Sure, she has her tomboy side, but Oona loves her some sparkle as much as the next girl. What better day to gift your pup some new bling?
6. Sweet Emotion
Don’t forget dessert! (Is that even possible? I’m pretty sure I’m always thinking about dessert. Even while eating dessert, I’m just imagining all the dessert I’m gonna have later). But for your pup, a box of chocolates is obviously out of the question, so why not treat your dog to some special biscuits or a pup-approved pastry?
When you’ve been with someone as long as I have, it’s important to remember to be adventurous and to try new things.
Hey, at least you tried.
7. Tube Time
On Valentine’s Day, some might prefer to be out at a swanky restaurant. Some might prefer to dance the night away. Me? I prefer to get as comfy as possible and just catch up on my stories. So now it’s time to slip into your sweats, kick back on the couch, and turn on the tube. Good news! You get to choose what you guys watch again.
8. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
No matter how amazing the episode of Fargo, try as we might to stay awake, Oona and I inevitably end all of our date nights by crashing out on the couch.
Happy International Women’s Day from all of us here at BarkPost!
