When it comes to exploring new places with your dog, there really is no better place than the west coast. From beaches to mountains to lakes and in between, you’re bound to have an experience you’ll never forget. Here are a few of our favorite amazing getaways on the west coast for you to take with your best friend.
Lake Tahoe, CA
When it comes to going on an adventure with your dog on the west coast, it’s hard to beat Lake Tahoe. With lots of dog-friendly campgrounds like Fallen Leaf Campground in South Lake Tahoe, hiking trails that take you to scenic views of the lake like the iconic Emerald Bay Overlook, and great spots to eat outdoors like Sprouts Cafe, you and your dog are in for a real treat! If you’re looking for a secluded dog beach, Kiva beach is a great place to escape the crowds!
Big Sur, CA
The beauty of this destination is one for the record books and a must-see for west coast adventure seekers. Take in the views at Bixby Bridge and then relax on the lesser-known Pfeiffer Beach. Then you can snag a spot at the dog-friendly Riverside Campground and cabins or stay at the one of the dog-friendly hotels (airbnb is a great option too!). Finally, get some awesome bbq at the River Inn where you can eat on adirondack chairs in the river out back with your pup.
San Juan Island, WA
If you’re heading up to the Pacific Northwest, a great adventure to go on with your dog is San Juan Island, an island just off the coast of Washington. Take the ferry from Anacortes to Friday Harbor, explore the west side of the island around Lime Kiln State Park (don’t forget to look for orcas!), then tie your dog up at one of the many restaurants in town with outdoor seating while enjoying dinner al fresco.
Point Reyes, CA
Just North of San Francisco lies the amazing Point Reyes National Seashore. Take highway 101 up the coast to see the beautiful Northern California coastline. North Beach is one of the only beaches where dogs are allowed, but that’s ok because it’s the best place to go! This place is relatively wild with huge dunes, enormous waves, and lots of driftwood for your dog to chase after and chew on. On your way back, stop at The Inverness Store for sandwiches. Out back there’s a good photo op of an iconic abandoned ship that’s perfect for taking a photo of your dog in front of. Another great beach over this way is Stinson Beach, a locals favorite where dogs are known to run in the waves on the northern most part of the beach.
Pismo Beach, CA
If you’ve ever thought about driving out and camping on the beach with your dog, Pismo Beach is where to do it! It’s one of the only places on the west coast that allows you to drive out on the beach. You can camp in a tent, or the back of your truck for a small fee. Here you can wake up to the sound of waves and the smell of salt water with your best bud! For food, we recommend cooking over the campfire!
The west coast has no shortage of amazing places to offer when it comes to taking an awesome adventure with your dog. Feeling restless for adventure already? Well, pack the car and go already – and don’t forget your four-legged friend!
