9 Breeds You’d Want As Your Partner On The Amazing Race

Here are nine breeds you’d want to have around if you are on that crazy reality trip around the world who will help win you that prize (and there for you when you have the inevitable crying breakdown due to the stress of it all).

1. Golden Retriever

Obviously, they retrieve things! Things you might need to stay alive. The chipper Goldie will keep you entertained during those boring, long days of waiting to be rescued. Pup might be a little too loving and silly to really guard against island predators, but at least that luscious golden coat will help keep you warm at night.

2. Cocker Spaniel

The loyal Cocker loves water! Just make sure to fashion your coconut shells into shears—this bad boy might get matted wandering around in the sea, salt, and sand. Cocker Spaniels stay agile and live into their teens, so they will be with you for the long haul, which can be handy while stranded.

3. Labrador Retriever

Vincent from the television show LOST was one of these steadfast pups. The family-friendly Lab swims, hunts, and protects. They’re even-tempered and just big enough to scare off any predators (like polar bears or smoke monsters)!

4. American Foxhound

The Foxhound will happily hunt island critters for food, while thriving in a hot climate. This noble pup will definitely bring home the bacon. From, you know, wild boars. Founding dogfather George Washington had a love for this breed—if they can help found a nation, they can definitely co-habitate on an island.

5. Portuguese Water Dog

Speaking of presidential pooches, the breed favored by President Obama literally has “water” as its middle name! These pups actually herd fish. Is that even possible??? Since that’s the most plentiful food on an island, this shaggy swimmer will come in very handy!

6. German Shorthaired Pointer

A skilled tracker, this pup will point the way to food and prey. The Pointer is good in water, and has the stamina to run from any dangers that might lurk on the island.

7. American Water Spaniel

Another water dog, the American Water Spaniel is a capable hunter with a water-resistant coat. This pup was bred for hunting in the northern regions of the United States, and would also be a tough survivor on a more arctic island.

8. Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Cousin to the Lab, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is specially trained in the art of waterfowl retrieval. So if you’re handy with the bow and arrow and catch a nice seagull for dinner, this pup’ll pick it up for you!

9. Australian Cattle Dog

They come from a land dog-under! It’s hot in Australia and these pups are naturally suited to extreme climates. They’re great during monsoon season—their double coat resists water from rain. An Aussie pup called Sophie Tucker even survived four months on an island, swimming six miles through shark-infested waters and surviving on wild goats. Pawsome!
